Recognizing Our Graduates

We would like to congratulate our graduates! Please send the name of your graduate and the school from which he or she will graduate to Chris Streed by May 22, and your graduate will be included in The Banner for June.

Sign-up for Vacation Bible School!

VBS will be held here at BUMC from Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Our theme is “Babylon-Daniel’s Courage in Captivity”. We will travel to Babylon to hear directly from Daniel about his adventure in the lions’ den. We will also learn his story through crafts, activities, music and more! Children ages 4 (by 1/1/12) through 5th grade learn a different Bible point each day through singing, crafts, games, drama, and snacks. There will be live farm animals again this year! Registration sheets are available to download, in the Narthex, and in the church office. Contact Missy Konopka, VBS Director/ Children’s Ministry coordinator with your questions.

BUMC Serves at the USO

BUMC currently has 25 members involved in our USO effort. We work at Terminal 3 every Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the 4th Sunday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It is a very rewarding experience helping and talking to our military families as they travel through O’Hare either coming or going home or to places of conflict throughout the world. The USO locations provide a safe oasis where the military can get a variety of assistance while traveling to lighten their burden as they put their lives on the line for our peace and freedom. Contact Jim Finn if you would like to work with us or would like to know more about the USO.

Planning and Planting the BUMC Garden

The wet weather has kept us from moving forward with the garden. The plowing and discing have been rescheduled for the coming week. We have plans this year to enlarge the garden by adding additional tomatoes, peppers and squash. Home Depot has provided us discounted plants and store credit for supplies. Our irrigation system, new this year, has been purchased and is ready to be installed. If the weather cooperates, we should be ready to plant by the week of May 20. If you would like to help us with the garden please call Dolores at the church office and give her your name and how we can contact you. The food pantry is counting on us this summer to provide them with fresh vegetables for those less fortunate.

Noah’s Ark Preschool Registering For Fall

Noah’s Ark Christian Preschool and Kindergarten is now registering 2-6 year olds for the 2012-2013 school year in Barrington United Methodist Church’s wonderful facility at 98 Algonquin Road (at Route 59) in Barrington. A ministry of BUMC, Noah’s Ark is located in the education wing of the church, which consists of five bright, spacious classrooms equipped with developmentally appropriate materials. There is also an expansive outside playground and an indoor motor room. The nationally certified Nature Explore Classroom allows children to explore nature in a safe environment. “Our preschool provides an environment which nurtures and stimulates the development of young children and surrounds them with God’s presence,” says Director Mary Bradley. Noah’s Ark offers low student to teacher ratios, plus all instructors meet state qualifications, and are trained in CPR and First Aid. Classes are half day, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. For tours of the facility and registration, please call (847) 844-3738.

Fall Planning…

Do you want to teach the kids next fall?? There are many openings for Sunday school (9:15) and Children’s Church (during 10:30 a.m. service). Call or e-mail Missy to hear more details. We are always looking for fresh faces to help teach our children of BUMC. You do not have to be a parent to help us—all are welcome!

Books Needed

Children’s Ministries is launching a library system just for you! Although we cannot have an actual “Book Mobile” in our building, we can, however, have a rolling cart filled with books! Children and parents will have the opportunity to borrow books to take home!

This is where we can use your help…if you have any Christian-based books (adult and children’s) that you are willing to donate, please bring them to Missy’s office. We would greatly appreciate your contributions!

Summer Office Hours

Staring the week of June 3 the summer office hours will be:

  • Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

UMW School of Christian Mission

Summer School of Christian Mission is coming to Judson University, Elgin, July 19-22. The theme is “That All May Have Life” and the “school” begins on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and concludes Sunday after worship and lunch. The days include a time of study, worship, small group sessions, and time for reflection.

There are three studies: “Immigration and the Bible” (spiritual growth study),“Haiti: Challenges and Hope” (geographic study), and “Poverty “ (issue study). You may attend the whole school, (Thursday evening, 4:00 p.m., through Sunday lunch) studying “Immigration” and another study of your choosing, or you may attend just “Mission Sampler Day,” July 19 (7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.). Mission Sampler is a one-day chance to get a little taste of each study as well as participate in worship. On that day you get a sample of all three studies. “Immigration” is led by Amos Oladipo and “Poverty” is led by Julia Jones. The Haiti study is led by Steve Good, who has experienced eleven mission trips to Haiti. His personal experience should make this timely study all the more informative. Scholarships are available from Elgin District UMW; forms for this and registration forms are on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

PLEASE consider this opportunity, it is an educational and enriching experience! Fees are $280 for adults for the full weekend, half that amount for those who commute to the school (not staying on campus at night), and $75 for Mission Sampler Day (if registration is postmarked by June 24.) Rates increase $25 for the full school and $10 for the Sampler Day for registrations postmarked July 1 through July 7. Questions? Contact Linda Osikowicz or Norma Jung-Stein. There will also be sessions for youth on Sampler Day, Thursday, July 19. They will be studying Haiti.
