The BUMC Rummage sale began during the depression as a way for neighbors to help each other. It has grown and is now the major fundraiser for Barrington United Methodist Women–that help is now reaching across the world. Here’s one UMW-supported mission that our Rummage Sale proceeds helps support:

Mary Elizabeth Inn and Verona Hotel are UMW-supported facilities that provide safe and permanent housing in San Francisco for women who were homeless or survivors of domestic violence. The Inn was built for a Methodist philanthropist in 1914 wanting to provide affordable housing for women coming to the city in search of schooling or employment. The deed is held by UMW, which provides property insurance and staff training. Counseling, case management, tutoring, yoga, computer classes, and meals are offered.

Mission u is coming to Judson University, Elgin, July 18-21. This educational retreat includes a one-day event which includes children and youth classes and a four-day retreat. The days include a time of study, worship, small group sessions, and time for reflection. There are three studies: “The Call: Living Sacramentally/Walking Justly” (spiritual growth study led by Dottie Priddy),“Roma of Europe” (geographic study led by Rev. Norval Brown and Peg Hansen), and “Poverty “ (issue study led by Julia Jones). PLEASE consider this opportunity, it is an educational and enriching experience! Fees are $295 for adults for the full weekend, $155 for those who commute to the school (not staying on campus at night), and $85 for Mission Sampler Day (if registration is postmarked by June 22; rates increase $30 for the full school and $10 for the Sampler Day for registrations postmarked June 23 through July 3) Questions? Contact Linda Osikowicz or Norma Jung-Stein. There will also be sessions for Children, ages 7-11 and Youth, ages 12-15 on Sampler Day, Thursday, July 18; they will be studying Migration.

ASP has been a constant presence in the Perry County area, one of the poorest counties in Appalachia with a poverty rate of 27.2% The average per capita income is $12,224.

The trip will be Sunday, October 27- Friday, November 1 and is open to adults 18 and older. This is a great opportunity for service for all adults, whether you’re recently graduated, mid-career, or retired. There is a $50 registration fee due when you sign-up for the trip. The total cost per person is $325. The Missions Ministry group will help to defray some of the cost with fund-raising. ASP takes care of all the details, leaving you free to immerse yourself in the experience and bond with your group. Your fees cover lodging, breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, construction materials, tools, project supplies, and delivery to work sites. Please contact the church office if you are interested in serving the people in Kentucky while growing in faith and fellowship.
