Connect, Learn, and Grow with Us!
As disciples of Jesus Christ, our task as members of the body of Christ is to nurture each other in faith and to provide intentional opportunities for persons to grow in their relationship with Christ and with each other. Adult spiritual formation is the name given to this intentional process of growth and nurture. The avenues through which adults develop their discipleship takes many different forms, but the unifying theme is the growth in relationship with Jesus Christ and the development of a Christ-centered life.
At Barrington United Methodist Church we will be intentional about our responsibility of nurturing adults in their faith and discipleship. This adult spiritual formation plan is intended as a guide to developing a comprehensive plan that makes opportunities for spiritual growth available to a wide variety of people who are at different ages and stages of their spiritual journey.
Mission/Vision Statement
The mission of BUMC’s adult spiritual formation ministry is to intentionally invite adults into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and to develop Christ-centered lives.
Our vision is a ministry that provides multi-faceted opportunities for adults to:
- grow in faith
- connect faith and life
- develop relationships with others of faith
- discover their gifts for ministry and service and become intentional stewards of those gifts
- express their love for Christ in all areas of their lives.
Goals
Our goal is to develop a ministry of adult spiritual formation that provides opportunities for intentional growth in faith and discipleship to adults of all ages. We seek to provide a multi-faceted ministry that engages people where they currently are in their faith journey and encourages them to move through in an ever-deepening continuum of growth.

- Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World (Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life)
The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet…but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him…yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.
How can you make that choice? In this Bible study, author Joanna Weaver shows how all of us—Marys and Marthas alike—can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.
This class is open to any mom interested in spending time with other moms in an atmosphere of encouragement. You don’t need to be a member of BUMC to attend. Childcare will be provided for infants, toddlers and kindergarteners not in school that morning. Contact Karen Twohig.
Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.

- Join “Breathing Spaces” Fridays at 10:00-10:30 a.m. at Cook Street Coffee in Barrington (Corner of Station and Cook Streets). All are welcome to this low key, fun and tasty setting to learn from scripture. Contact Pastor Cynthia Anderson for information.
Saturdays, 9:00 a.m.
- We are discussing Sinning Like a Christian: A New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins by William H. Willimon. The seven deadly sins are a well-known topic, but, surprisingly, not much has been written about them in recent years from a serious theological viewpoint. Dr. Willimon takes an unflinching look at the meaning and substance of sin. All men are invited on Saturdays, 8:30-9:00 a.m. for coffee/food/fellowship, then discussion from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Parlor. Contact Jim Finn or Brian Kramper.
