Adult Educators

Connect, Learn, and Grow with Us!

As disciples of Jesus Christ, our task as members of the body of Christ is to nurture each other in faith and to provide intentional opportunities for persons to grow in their relationship with Christ and with each other. Adult spiritual formation is the name given to this intentional process of growth and nurture. The avenues through which adults develop their discipleship takes many different forms, but the unifying theme is the growth in relationship with Jesus Christ and the development of a Christ-centered life.

At Barrington United Methodist Church we will be intentional about our responsibility of nurturing adults in their faith and discipleship. This adult spiritual formation plan is intended as a guide to developing a comprehensive plan that makes opportunities for spiritual growth available to a wide variety of people who are at different ages and stages of their spiritual journey.

Mission/Vision Statement

The mission of BUMC’s adult spiritual formation ministry is to intentionally invite adults into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and to develop Christ-centered lives.

Our vision is a ministry that provides multi-faceted opportunities for adults to:

  • grow in faith
  • connect faith and life
  • develop relationships with others of faith
  • discover their gifts for ministry and service and become intentional stewards of those gifts
  • express their love for Christ in all areas of their lives.

Goals

Our goal is to develop a ministry of adult spiritual formation that provides opportunities for intentional growth in faith and discipleship to adults of all ages. We seek to provide a multi-faceted ministry that engages people where they currently are in their faith journey and encourages them to move through in an ever-deepening continuum of growth.

  • Crazy Love

Come join us as we read and talk about the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan. Here’s a brief description of the book from Amazon.com:

“Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts—it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.”

  • Home Builders 1 & 2

We are parents of children, confirmands, youth interested in building faith in our homes. Come join any time after the kids get settled. We will be discussing the book, Heaven is for Real. Facilitator: Julia Hooper

  • The Good and Beautiful Life

Based on the book which follows the Good and Beautiful God, our journey moves from knowing God to living like Christ. Following the sermon on the mount, we will discuss how to see beyond the vices that cause ruin — anger, lust, lying, worry, and judging — to a life that is modeled on Christ.

Facilitated by Pastor Cynthia Anderson in the Parlor (behind the kitchette).

  • 24 Hours that Changed the World at the “Chapel Drop In”

No single event in human history has received more attention than the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. In this series, Adam Hamilton guides us through the last twenty-four hours of Jesus’ life. Each weekly session is designed to help us experience and understand the significance of Jesus’ suffering and death in a way we never have before. Whether you are a long-time Christian or simply curious about the story of Christ’s crucifixion, you are invited to join us in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life at Drop In Chapel.

We will meet in the Chapel … No commitment worries – attend as you can. Each session is independent of previous or future sessions. The “Chapel Drop In” is exactly what it says—a place to drop in any Sunday that you can. No books or studying are needed. Just Drop In! Facilitator is Jim Oban.

Wednesdays, 9:15 a.m.

  • God’s Wisdom for a Mother’s Heart (A Bible Study for Moms) Wednesdays, January 25 through March 7, 2012.

God’s Word is the foundation for these seven lessons that will encourage you with scriptural insights and practical applications to creatively love and nurture your children. Each session features verses, questions, ideas, and prayers for daily and weekly study, and reminds us we don’t have to be perfect moms. We simply need to know where to go to be transformed and empowered — and that’s to God’s Word.

Formatted to suit a mom’s busy schedule, Bobbie Wolgemuth has written God’s Wisdom for a Mother’s Heart to provide mothers at any stage of life with thoughtful, biblical encouragement for each and every day.

This class is open to any mom interested in spending time with other moms in an atmosphere of encouragement. You don’t need to be a member of BUMC to attend. Childcare will be provided for infants, toddlers and kindergarteners not in school that morning. Contact Karen Twohig.
